30 Things to Do

Riding_HowickWe celebrate Women this August and share our list of things to do to ensure a memorable Midlands stay. Some are found right on your doorstep at Rockwood Lodges, with some justifying a bit of a day trip to the rest of the KZN Midlands.

  1. Indulge in the simple pleasures in life like a rustic farm swing or a solitary forest hike.
  2. Reconnect with your inner child, riding a bike or playing in the fields or jumping on the trampoline!
  3. Catch up with your beloved over a cuppa – some beautiful views won’t hurt…
  4. Expand your reading horizons. Grab one off the shelf or set off on foot with a nature guide.
  5. Switch off. With no cell phone reception at Rockwood Forest Lodge, there is no way of being tracked down. You’re welcome…
  6. Row a boat. Nothing beats an afternoon laze-a-bout on a farm dam.
  7. Pack a picnic and enjoy the beautiful grasslands and indigenous forest of Rockwood Mountain Lodge.
  8. Challenge yourself. Our own 20km Mountain Biking track is magnificent or pick up one of the trails from the Karkloof Country Club.
  9. Bond with someone new. Most of our loyal staff have been with us since we opened and their warmth in serving you makes it difficult not to strike up a conversation. You’d be amazed at some of their stories of the area!
  10. Treat yourself to an organic feast. Stock up with supplies from the Karkloof Farmers Market, season it with some of our fresh herbs grown outside the Farm House and cook on the Big Green Egg…Bliss.
  11. Take advantage of Sakabula Golf Course’s free Women’s Day Golf.
  12. Enjoy being Jane for a day with the Karkloof Canopy Tour. At our exclusive discounted rate, your “Tarzan” would be quite happy to join!
  13. Tap into your creative side with a pottery or stained glass course at Aladdins de-Light.
  14. Indulge in a guilty pleasure – Tasha’s Fantastic Fudge is found in neighbouring Hilton or you can shop online with our new free wifi offering at Rockwood Farm House and Cottage!
  15. Kit out your home with a traditional Zulu quilt found at the Howick Falls centre.
  16. Enjoy the Music with The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra playing at Howick High School on Sunday, 10/08.
  17. Learn to make natural soaps, cosmetics and medicines with a course at Peter’s Gate Herbal Centre.
  18. Bag bragging rights to having visited internationally renowned Ardmore Ceramic Studio. Of course, you must take home the “evidence”…
  19. Stock up on some homegrown Natal Midlands wines with Meander Fine Wines. This goes rather well with suggestion #5.
  20. Do good. Visit the Karkloof Conservation Centre for some unforgettable birding – and proceeds go towards conservation!
  21. Splurge on a range of canvas travel bags, hats, belts and cotton clothing at Dirt Road along the Curry’s Post Road.
  22. Man up! Enjoy a round of clay pigeon shooting and show the guys how it’s done at Kleinbosch Estate.
  23. Get cultured. No Midlands visit is complete without having visited the Nelson Mandela capture site and The Truth Store & Cafe.
  24. Chocolate Heaven. What more can we say…
  25. Discover the beauty of the Berg on horseback as you ride through game, forest and rivers with Berg Trails.
  26. Support the local community of Mphophomeni with a hike through their hills on the first Tuesday of the month.
  27. Laze around. Hangaboutz Hammocks is the leading Midlands hammock manufacturer and situated at the Howick Falls Hotel. Take one home!
  28. Go green with gorgeous goodies and foods from Dovehouse Organic Farm & Shop – now situated at 78 Main Street Howick.
  29. Pamper yourself. Stock up on essential oils and scented candles at The Lavender Co. at the Piggly Wiggly Country Village.
  30. Create your own adventure. Do as much or as little as you please, but do it at Rockwood!

Happy Women’s Day!
