Mountain-Biking: The Karkloof is fast becoming known as one of the top Mountain-Biking destinations in South Africa and riders from as far as Gauteng make the trek down to the Midlands for some awesome riding. While Summer riding is fun, it also falls right in the rainy season, so if mud is your thing, wait for it to get a bit warmer. Many new riders, though, enjoy getting to know their bike in slightly “easier” conditions, so if this is you, Winter is the time you want to come stay with us. The sun is bright, the air crisp and the riding fabulous!
Hiking: With a 20km trail network on our property, it’s easy to pick a hike that suits you and your family best. One of the most rewarding hikes is to Godwini falls (accessible from just outside Rockwood Forest Lodge). About 45 minutes into the indigenous forest you’ll find the base of two falls, equally breathtaking. Another good hike can be taken around Rockwood Mountain Lodge. Ducking into and out of the trees, it’s a great way to explore the forest. Of course, you could also meander along the Mountain-Biking route which covers Jeep, single and forest track. This trail is accessible from any of the lodges.
Build a snowman: Winter snow in the Midlands draws day travellers from Durban and many Rockwood Lodges guests have travelled across the N3 highway to the R103 side of the Midlands Meander to enjoy the snow. Many guests have also enjoyed snow on the property – with one snowfall as late as October one year!
Enjoy a pint: Nottingham Road Brewery is a popular day trip destination for our guests, especially in Winter when one needs to warm up with some liquid refreshment. While there, check out some of the popular eateries along the tourist route.
